‘In the Eighties I had my own record business. I was a typical Eighties cliché. I had the cars, the house, the image, and everything was beyond my means. I spent too much time at parties and then everything imploded.
‘I remember the day I realised I had to give everything back – the Porsche, the big house – and I wasn’t crying.
'I had this huge sense of relief. The real story was that I didn’t actually own the things I had. I had a mortgage for the house, loans for the car – nothing was real.
‘Losing everything is probably the greatest lesson you learn. I went back to my parents’ house (At age 30) and started again. From then on everything I did was different. It was all about the work.
‘I work very, very hard and I expect people who work with me to do the same. I don’t believe in a five-day week or an eight-hour day. I believe in 24/7.
'I want to be able to get hold of someone on holiday or at 3am if there’s something I need. The same goes for me.’
He pauses. ‘When I look at the people who come into the X Factor auditions, what I’m looking for possibly even more than vocal talent is that work ethic.
